Review: NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Lodhi.

Being not that huge brighter lips fan, I rarely adventure myself into the full pigmented and bright lip shades. However last year, when NARS came in Italy, I fell in love with some NARS Satip Lip Pencil shades, and within the handful of nude colors on my wishlist, there still was a brighter shade, Lodhi, that catched my eyes. I immediately thought Lodhi would have been the perfect shade to suit my colors and features. It also happens to be the only shade I own right now from the entire range, and the one that made me fall in love with this NARS line.

Non essendo una grande fan dei colori accesi sulle labbra, mi avventuro raramente nel mondo dei rossetti o prodotti labbra pigmentati e colorati. L'anno scorso però, quando NARS è finalmente arrivato in Italia, mi sono innamorata di alcune tonalità delle NARS Satip Lip Pencil, e nel mucchio di colori nude nella mia wishlist, c'era una tonalità più accesa, Lodhi, che aveva catturato la mia attenzione. Ho da subito pensato a Lodhi come una tonalità che potesse donare al mio incarnato e i miei colori. Si dà anche il caso che sia l'unica dell'intera gamma ad essere in mio possesso, e quella che poi mi ha fatto innamorare di questa linea.

If I had to spend only a few words on the NARS Satin Lip Pencils formula, they would be: creamy, pigmented, soft, comfortable, long lasting. However we are on a beauty blog, and I'll go deeper now. Lodhi is the only shade I tried from the range, but I swear I swatched it all in the stores, and I saw a lot of similarities in the formulas of all of them, then let me generalize and talk for the whole line; just always keep in mind there could be some tiny differences between one shade to another, mainly on the lasting front. NARS Satin Lip Pencils are, as the name suggest, lip pencils very similar to the Clinique Chubby Sticks or the Revlon Kissable Balm Stains in the "pencil form" but with a completely different formula. Where the Clinique Chubby Sticks (the first version) and the Revlon Kissable Balm Stains are stickier, balmy and sheer, the NARS Satin Lip Pencil are on a completely different level with their soft, creamy, comfortable but meanwhile extremely pigmented in one coat formula. They are way more comparable to the Clinique Chubby Sticks Intense (I reviewed one of them, Heftiest Hibiscus, here) which have a more full color but they are still not even close in the formula.  I especially love how easy to apply they are, since they go on your lips very smoothly and effortless, however sometimes, above all on the lips outline, you may need a more precise hand in the application, maybe help yourself with a tiny lip brush to achieve a foolproof perfect lips shape where the big pencil point can't go. As I said the formula is very creamy but not sticky, goes on fully pigmented with a light hand application, results the most comfortable to wear within all the lip products I tried (excluding lip balms, of course), it doesn't dry the lips out at all. And if all of that was not enough to convince you, it's also pretty long wearing as well: the color lasts a long time on, a good three or four hours on my lips, and goes away evenly without creating unflattering spots of color here and there. However they clearly are not like their brothers NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, which being matte, are of course thought to be a lot more long lasting; the Satin ones tend to fade when you eat or drink, and may need to be reapplied during the day, but on the other hand they have the most comfortable formula ever for being quite long wearing as well.

Lodhi is a beautiful coraly pink shade, ideal for spring or summer time, but so nice even when it's colder to bring a pop of color to a plain makeup. I think it's a very flattering color on me, which pair awesome-ly with my pale skintone and dark hair. However I feel like it could look good on a tun of different skintones, to me it seems a pretty versatile color. This can be the perfect girly touch to an outifit, a brighter option for daytime, or, if barely patted with fingers onto the lips on top of a lip balm, the perfect everyday shade to make you look more alive if you need it. The latter is the way I wear it the most, the easier for me in the morning since it doesn't need a high level of precision and when it fades noone would really notice it. However I like applying it directly from the stick and fully pigmented quite often, which to me is a bit unusual since I'm always the one with bare or nude lips. It helped me a lot to enter the brighter lips front without making the whole experience shocking to me, so I highly reccomend this color to anyone who is scared by bold lips but want to experiment the not-so-shocking brighter colors as well. Being so pigmented the color transfers on the lip exactly as it is in the pencil, completely covering your lips color underneath.

Se dovessi pronunciarmi sulla formula dei NARS Satin Lip Pencil con solo poche parole, queste sarebbero: cremosi, pigmentati, morbidi, comodi da indossare, e con una buona durata. Però siamo su un beauty blog, e cercherò di approfondire. Lodhi è l'unica tonalità che possiedo al momento di tutta la linea, ma l'ho swatchata tutta una ventina di volte, e ho potuto notare alcune somiglianze nella formula di queste matite indipendentemente dal colore, quindi lasciatemi generalizzare, tenendo a mente che magari tra una tonalità e l'altra potrebbe esserci qualche piccola differenza, soprattutto sul fronte durata. I NARS Satin Lip Pencil sono, come suggerisce il nome, dei matitoni labbra simili nel packaging ai Clinique Chubby Stick o i Revlon Kissable Balm Stain, ma molto diversi nella formula. Laddove i Clinique Chubby Stick (la prima versione) e i Revlon Kissable Balm Stain sono un po' appiccicosi, simil lip balm, e sheer, i NARS Satin Lip Pencil provengono da un mondo completamente diverso con la loro formula soffice, cremosa, comoda da indossare ma allo stesso tempo estremamente pigmentata in una passata. Sotto questo punto di vista sono molto più simili ai Clinique Chubby Stick Intense (ne ho recensito uno, Heftiest Hibiscus, here) che sono più pigmentati e hanno un colore più pieno, ma la formula è ancora molto differente. Amo soprattutto come siano semplici da applicare, dato che si stendono senza sforzi, però qualche volta, sopratutto sul contorno labbra, può essere necessaria una mano più precisa, e lì può venire in soccorso un pennellino labbra per perfezionare le zone che la punta del matitone non raggiungerebbero. Come ho detto la formula è davvero cremosa ma non appiccicosa, già con una mano leggera il colore è pieno, risulta poi essere davvero comodo da indossare, non tira o secca le labbra, praticamente uno dei prodotti labbra più comodi che abbia mai provato (a parte il burrocacao). E se tutto ciò non vi ha ancora convinte, è anche piuttosto duraturo sulle labbra: il colore dura intatto a lungo, tre o quattro ore su di me, e quando se ne va lo fa gradualmente senza lasciare qui e là antiestetiche macchie di colore. Chiaramente non sono al livello dei loro fratelli NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, che essendo matte tendono naturalmente ad avere una migliore durata; i Satin tendono a sbiadirsi bevendo o mangiando, e possono aver bisogno di essere riapplicati durante la giornata, ma dalla loro parte hanno il fatto di essere super confortevoli pur durando piuttosto a lungo.

Lodhi è un bellissimo rosa corallo, ideale per la stagione estiva o primaverile, ma adorabile anche nei mesi più freddi per portare un pizzico di colore ad un makeup altrimenti troppo comune. Penso che sia un colore che mi doni particolarmente, in piacevole contrasto con la mia pelle chiara e i capelli scuri. Penso possa però essere una tonalità che stia bene sulle più disparate varietà di coloriti, mi sembra un colore molto versatile. Può essere il perfetto tocco femminile in un outfit, un'opzione più accesa per il giorno, o, se leggermente tamponato con le dita sulle labbra sopra ad un burrocacao, il colore perfetto per tutti i giorni, per sembrare un po' più vive qualora se ne avesse bisogno. Quest'ultimo è il modo in cui lo indosso più spesso, il più semplice per me al mattino dato che non ha bisogno di alti livelli di precisione e che quando il colore inizia a scomparire nessuno se ne accorge davvero. Comunque mi piace spesso applicarlo direttamente sulle labbra per avere un colore pieno, cosa un po' inusuale per me dato che sono conosciuta per essere quella con labbra nude o quasi. Mi ha aiutato molto ad entrare nel mondo delle labbra più accese senza rendere l'intera esperienza scioccante, quindi lo consiglio altamente a chi è spaventato dalle labbra bold ma vuole sperimentare con dei colori più accesi ma non scioccanti. Essendo così pigmentato il colore si trasferisce sulle labbra esattamente com'è nella mina, coprendo completamente il colore delle labbra sottostanti.

Clinique Chubby Stick Intense in 04 Heftiest Hibiscus, NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Lodhi, Rimmel Kate Lasting Finish in 111 Kiss of Life

I haven't a lot of similar colors to compare Lodhi with since I'm not a huge bright lips girl. However I found two orangy red shade which you may think could look similar to Lodhi. As you can see from the picture, Lodhi (in the middle) is a lot more pink than Kiss of Life (right), which is also completely different in the formula, less pigmented with one coat, but matte and more drying and long lasting. Heftiest Hibiscus (left) is pretty similar in the color, though it's a lot more on the red side, but far far away in the formula, which is a lot stickier and less creamy and pigmented.

While removing them can be a bit tricky sometimes (nothing that good old Bioderma can't solve), Lodhi and, I think, the NARS Satin Lip Pencil range in general don't need particular care and attentions, however if your lips are extremely dry like mine, they can underline it a bit, nothing that can't be solved by a good lip scrub (if you feel fancy) or simply a good amount of hydration from a lip balm (maybe not immediately before applying the lip pencil, to avoid that the color start running off your lips). Infact the only downside I found is that Lodhi can sometimes be a bit elusive and smudgy, nothing to worry about if you are used to don't ever touch your makeup (which I am not), but I never really feel the need of a matching lip pencil underneath. Finally on the cons zone we have the fact that these pencils need to be sharpen with a not-so-classic sharpener (I went crazy to find the one that fits it, and finally I found the Kiko offering was perfect), which also means you waste a bit of product everytime you need to sharpen it. But in general this is definitely one of the best discovering made in 2013, which is why, if I did had to mention another lip product between the "Best of 2013", Lodhi would have been it. Now I can't wait to try out some other shades from the range, I seriously have an unlimited want list.

Non possiedo molti colori simili a Lodhi a cui compararlo dato che non sono mai stata una che indossa rossetti accesi. Ho comunque trovato due rossi aranciati che potrebbero sembrare assomigliargli. Come vedete dalla foto, Lodhi (al centro) è molto più rosa di Kiss of Life (a destra), che è anche completamente differente in quanto a formula, meno pigmentato alla prima mano, ma matte e leggermente più secco e con migliore durata. Heftiest Hibiscus (a sinistra) è molto simile come colore, anche se è in base rossa, ma distante nella formula, che è molto più appiccicosa e meno cremosa e pigmentata.

Se rimuoverli può essere un po' difficoltoso a volte (niente che un buon vecchio Bioderma non possa risolvere), Lodhi e, penso, l'intera linea dei Satin Lip Pencil in generale, non necessitano di particolari attenzioni, però se le labbra sono piuttosto secche come le mie, possono un po' sottolinearlo, cosa che si risolve facilmente con un buon scrub labbra (se si vuole esagerare) o semplicemente con una buona dose di idratazione da un burro labbra (magari non immediatamente prima di applicare il matitone, per evitare che il colore sbavi). Infatti l'unica nota negativa che ho trovato è che Lodhi può a volte essere un po' sfuggevole e sbavare un po', soprattutto se siete come me e non vi lasciate in pace il viso per un attimo, ma non ho mai davvero sentito l'esigenza di applicarci sotto un matita labbra coordinata. Infine sulla zona "contro" rimane solo il fatto che queste matite devono essere temperate e non con un temperino troppo classico (sono impazzita per trovare quello dalle dimensioni adatte, e ho infine scoperto che quello di Kiko è perfetto), che significa anche che si spreca un po' di prodotto ogni volta che gli si fa la punta. Ma in generale questo prodotto è stata una delle migliori scoperte del 2013, che è il motivo per cui, se avessi dovuto menzionare un altro prodotto labbra nei miei "Best of 2013", questo sarebbe stato Lodhi. Adesso non vedo l'ora di provare altre tonalità dalla stessa linea, anche perchè ho una wishlist illimitata.

NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Lodhi is available in stores that stock NARS like Sephora and SpaceNK, or online on the NARS website, HQhair, SpaceNK or Asos at 18£ (or so). I know the price isn't the most affordable, but these lip pencils are completely worth, have the best formula and the most beautiful colors. I hope I can confirm you guys that the formulas are exactly the same between one shade and another, which would mean I get to try some others soon!

NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Lodhi è disponibile fisicamente in Italia solo da Sephora, o su negozi online come il sito NARS, HQhair e lo stesso Sephora a prezzi vari: Sephora e il sito NARS europeo la vendono a 25€ (strano ma vero, Sephora non rincara i prezzi qui), mentre HQhair a 21,89€. Ora diciamo che se avete un 20% di sconto da Sephora vale pure la pena acquistarlo lì, ma altrimenti non è decisamente conveniente. Io (anzi il mio ragazzo) l'ho acquistata da SpaceNK mesi fa, che però ora non spedisce più NARS al di fuori del Regno Unito, per nostra disgrazia. Ora, so che il prezzo non è esattamente economico, ma questi matitoni valgono ogni centesimo, hanno la migliore formula e una vasta scelta di colori. Spero di potervi confermare a breve che la formula sia la stessa e non vari tra una tonalità e l'altra, che vorrebbe tra l'altro dire che ne proverei altre presto!
